Initial Citizen Meeting with School Board Members
November 10, 2005
School Board members, Thomas E. Reed (At-Large Member) and Mark
J. Nuzzaco (Catoctin District) attended a meeting at the Waterford
Elementary School to discuss the proposed new Waterford Elementary
School. Highlights from the meeting:
- Mr. Nuzzaco and the Waterford PTO didn't learn about the new
school until it was released on Monday as part of the FY 2007 through
FY 2012 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) and Capital Assets Replacement
Program (CARP).
- New school is proposed because larger schools cost less per student.
The new school planning is driven by the effort to reduce costs
because of the number of new schools that must be built to accommodate
Loudoun's growth.
- Issues relating to a school this size include parking (up to
10 acres), water use, traffic, bus safety on country roads, and
the quality of education.
- The school design will not reflect the nature of the Waterford
area. Rather, to save money, Loudoun will develop one two story
school design which will then be used throughout Loudoun.
